FH044-046 Yves Malone – Three Movies: Abysscoteque, The ECHO People, Zenith City

yves-3-movies

RIYL: dark action soundtracks to 80′s movies, darkwave, synthwave, outrun

Treading in the realm of synth soundscape artists like Perturbator, Umberto, and Gianni Rossi, Yves Malone diverges, reveling in the scenes between scenes, the sketch of a little moment rather than the bombast of the crescendo or the extension of a final dance sequence spread out to club length. These three soundtracks are akin to an uncertain author’s scene-by-scene narrative, the shouts and whispers of an orator practiced in the arc of the tragic tale. While tangentially related to sub-genres like synthwave, dreamwave or outrun (with the analog technology and timbre of 1980’s technology), Malone, never the purist, colors his palate with splashes of minimalist drone and dark 80’s metal, the lesser told side of retro-synth gothicism. Originally released digitally in 2012, Field Hymns is pleased to offer these soundtracks in a limited edition, pro-dubbed three cassette set.

FH043 German Army – Tassili Plateau

german army, tassili plateau

RIYL: Cabaret Voltaire, Psychic TV, sacred geology, Chariots of the Gods, autochthonous audiology

Enigmatic California duo German Army creates often-portentous music illuminated by fading cultural voices and barren, shifting lands. Following a dizzying array of tapes, CDs and LPs in the last three years, the first four GeAr cassettes of 2014 share broader musical approaches. And collectively, they suggest a system of conceptual continuity that’s just begging to be deciphered with a Walkman and a few batteries. Our humble release of the quartet, “Tassili Plateau,” feels like the keystone of them all, music and message(s?) slowly coming into focus. Short, taut songs, visited by Bollywood dervishes with freckles of exotica, buttressed by fried drum machines lifted from the quarterdeck of Captain (Richard H) Kirk himself, and musically expanded to allow for moments of warmth and redemption, this might be the best outing by German Army yet.

FH042 Scammers – Cover you

fh042

RIYL: The Juan MacLean, Soft Cell, David Bowie, Hot Chip, The Presets, Scott Walker

Scammers is the man who puts ice to your your chest after a five hour rave. Scammers is the man who fills your coffee order at 7 in the morning and still has glitter in his eyebrows. Scammers is the man who uses sly innuendo as a razor blade. Scammers is the man who resents everything you are and hates what you have become. Scammers is insidious. Scammers works rank and file to bring the system down from within. In the very end you never would have known who it was if it wasn’t for the glitter…the damning glitter. But you never really got him anyway, did you?

FH040 Black Unicorn – Traced Landscapes

black-unicorn

RIYL: Tangerine Dream, Daphne Oram, Cluster, Kosmische, Radiophonic Workshop

Traced Landscapes is the law of correspondence seen from the rear view mirror of a departing space shuttle. A record of the parallel grown between macroscopic and microscopic in the basic urge for pattern, order, and meaning. Or like a thin sheet of paper — the copied blueprints of grand and unfathomable designs. These tracks are alien artifacts unearthed in parched deserts, planets orbiting like electrons, scale a relative term in washes of synthesized serendipity and filtered waves crashing upon shores of conscious reflection. The revelation is akin to the experience of Oedipa Maas in Pynchon’s The Crying of Lot 49 as she senses the strange connection between city and circuit, “…she thought of the time she’d opened a transistor radio to replace a battery and seen her first printed circuit. The ordered swirl of houses and streets, from this high angle, sprang at her now with the same unexpected, astonishing clarity as the circuit card had . . . there were to both outward patterns a hieroglyphic sense of concealed meaning, of an intent to communicate.” Please enjoy your experience.

FH041 Cane Swords – Temple Swords

cane swords, temple swords

RIYL: Morton Subotnick, Keith Fullerton Whitman, Golden Retriever, Caboladies

Akron, Ohio synthesists Cane Swords return to ultra-terrestrial form with an analog odyssey of planetary drift and tindered timbre to fuel interstellar craft seeking deep space revelation. Washes of infinite blue light cool the jet stream as a profusion of electronic sounds wobble cosmic in long form meditations and bursts of sonic spasm. Like a soundtrack to a lost Painlevé film about the deepest riches of hyperdimensional scuba diving heard through beams of teslascope and fractured telegraph — Temple Swords elicits wonder in the true face of the infinite. Requisite listening for deep winter nights both in Sol system and abroad.

FH039 Mattress – Fuck The Future

mattress, rex marshall, fuck the future

RIYL: Nick Cave, Suicide, Dirty Beaches

Portland Oregon’s reigning king of white-velvet doom returns with a sixer of vile yearnings and throbbing confessions. Gritty analog drum machines and flabby baselines drenched in reverb fill holes in the body formally filled with things like love and forgiveness. FUCK THE FUTURE has been said to be rough around the edges, brooding and somewhat frightening, like “Stephin Merritt crooning inside a locked closet”…

Rex Marshall is from Portland, OR
